The Phonemes & Metal Kites

THE PHONEMES and METAL KITES are on tour in Western Canada in June.
Theremin versus girl group harmonies!
The Phonemes and Metal Kites are teaming up for a tour across western Canada in June. Both projects are anchored by musical shapeshifters, and have engaged with a revolving coterie from Canada’s musical vanguard that have included members of Final Fantasy, A Silver Mt. Zion, Forest City Lovers, Snowblink, and the Silt. Performing as a duo, this tour is a unique collaboration between the two songwriters Magali Meagher and John Tielli.
THE PHONEMES (blocks recording club)
“Magali Meagher’s voice sounds wholesome and worldly at the same time…The music is nuanced and grabs you with catchy hooks, harmonies and rounds.” Exclaim!
The main project of songwriter Magali Meagher, the Phonemes’ sinewy lyrical imagery finds purchase in simple, melody driven songs and layered rhythm. Sometimes with a band and sometimes with only her own two wings, Magali has sung her way across North America and Europe with Owen Pallett, Bob Wiseman, Basia Bulat, Laura Barrett, The Hidden Cameras, and others, backed up American indie icon Daniel Johnston on drums, and opened Kids in the Hall Scott Thompson’s “Scottastrophe” tour. She’s also a member of the wildly popular, Weezer approved, all-lady cover band Sheezer. Magali is working on a second full length recording entitled “The Vanishing Point” to be released in 2010.

METAL KITES
“Truly special…This is the kind of impassioned, sophisticated music we need to hear more ” Exclaim! on John Tielli of Metal Kites
Despite the laws of physics, John Tielli’s Metal Kites have taken flight. This unusual and beautiful feat was accomplished with the aid of male and female voices, guitars, synths, drums and an assortment of unconventional sounds including tapping, howling, clanking, thumping, swishing, and the melancholic cries of a Theremin. John Tielli’s previous Ottawa based ensemble Clark The Band released two critically acclaimed albums, and the lineup in the early to mid 2000s included Time Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara who would later go on to join the celebrated Arcade Fire.
